MANILA ⸺ Bb. Pilipinas 2021 made "herstory" with first ever all-female hosts, Catriona Gray and Nicole Cordoves, last July 11 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, as it launches its first-ever virtual-exclusive live simultaneous telecast on both television and digital platforms after the pageant's two-year hiatus.
Bb. Pilipinas’ most celebrated alumnae, Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray, and Miss Grand International 2016 1st Runner-up Nicole Cordoves, owned the stage with their bravura, poise, and show-stopping coutures as first-ever all female hosts tandem in the history of the country’s most prestigious beauty pageant.
In February 2020, Catriona met for the first time after her Miss Universe win in 2018, Mrs. Stella Araneta and Mr. Jeorge Araneta, together with the board of Cornerstone Entertainment Inc., where they discussed future projects with Catriona—one of which is hosting Bb. Pilipinas. More than a year later, all plans came to fruition.
For the very first time since its run, Bb. Pilipinas 2021 aired live digitally on their official YouTube page, adapting to the new virtual landscape of not only events but pageantry and beauty entertainment. Nicole Cordoves hosted the chatroom composed of beauty pageant enthusiasts and fans alike, who had the privilege of interacting with the host herself in real time. Though a live audience was not permitted in the venue for safety reasons, avid fans blasted support and cheers across social media, with Twitter in particular. The hashtag #BinibiningPilipinas2021 soared to and stayed at the #1 spot of trending topics on Twitter throughout the duration of the show.
Apart from the Bb. Pilipinas’ YouTube channel, the event also simulcasted live on multiple TV channels and platforms such as A2Z Channel 11, Metro Channel, Kapamilya Channel, and iWantTFC. The two-year layoff of the pageant proved itself to be worth all the wait, with a reception greeted with applause and hurrah from across the media.
In an exclusive scoop with Catriona and Nicole, the two alumnae went backstage to personally give a message of encouragement to the candidates.
Catriona also sent a video-recorded message to the 34 Binibinis in competition last July 7, 2021 during one of the programs with Boy Abunda.
Netizens were all praises for the two queens who nailed every bit of their segments, of course not without the inevitable memes.
The event climaxes with a video message from Catriona and Nicole which they wrote themselves. In an Instagram post, Nicole shared how Catriona volunteered to do their spiels after the first script reading with the production team.
“We wrote this message together in the hopes that we get to tell the story of every Filipino in this pandemic—a story of heartbreak and newfound hope,” Nicole expresses in the caption. Some of the words from the piece were derived from our national anthem, a resounding reminder of the Filipino courage against adversities.
